VagabondsIt's summertime... the perfect season to replace those tired looking "school shoes" with a hip set of casual kicks. Enter "Sanuk" (pronounced Suh-Nook, with an emphasis on nook). Cool shoes for kids, plain and simple.Breezy styled "Vagabonds" from the Sidewalk Surfers line are the order of the day, served up in an assortment of eye-catching patterns. These treads look different because the folks that make them ARE different. The team at Sanuk aims to create shoes that blend "funk" with functionality, and intentionally partner with professional athletes that are known as much for their moxy and character, as for the sports they engage in. That way of thinking has led Sanuk to offer shoe styles that truly break from the pack.Really, there's something for every youngster here: from white canvas with pink piping to camo-wrapped goodness, and everything in between. After all, we'd expect nothing less from a company named for the Thai word for "fun".

Candela ZoomOXO's Candela Zoom is a fantastic night-time plaything and bedside curiosity for any toddler. Shaped like a retro rocket, the cordless Zoom illuminates when removed from it's base, giving off a soft glow that helps "wee ones" slip peacefully into slumber. With juice enough for 8 hours of light, the Zoom can be fully charged again by placing it on it's child-safe base. The base glows as well whenever the rocket is removed, providing two lights in one.The Zoom is available in red only, and comes with "lifetime" LED bulbs that never need replacement. Lack of exposed wiring also makes it safe for children to handle. For the curious, take a look at OXO's "Toomi", a similar product that is yellow in color, and is shaped like a snail's head.

Bodum BistroOver the years, nearly every kitchen appliance has gone through a design evolution. Spurred on by the digital revolution, appliances have become more than just utilitarian machines. Sure, they do what they're supposed to, but they've managed to become compliments to our style, and often capture the imagination and aesthetic sensibilities of modern families. The refrigerator, the range, even the ubiquitous "late to the party" microwave has managed to become a bold statement of "self". All but one. Case in point how excited are you about the toaster?Bodum, long known for bringing design statements into the kitchen in small doses, has worked it's magic on the long neglected "maker of toast". It's called "The Bistro". It's modern. It's colorful. And, it's fun. Can a toaster really be fun? Well, if you had ever desired that your toaster match the chocolate brown chairs in the breakfast nook or the lime green margarita maker, you'd be out of luck until now.Constructed of stainless steel and wrapped in a perforated, rubberized material, Bodum's Bistro toaster is a nice twist on an old standard. Color choices range from red to purple, allowing this appliance to really "pop out" as any modern toaster should.

Eames ElephantSomehow, there's no such thing as raising children without elephants. From Dumbo to Babar, these gentle giants have earned a permanent place in the upbringing of our children. The Eames elephant, originally designed in 1945 by husband and wife team Charles and Ray Eames, has gone into full-scale production for the first time. The Eamses were responsible for a range of iconic American furniture classics during the 19th century, and masterfully sculpted this adorable elephant out of wood some 65 years ago. A limited-edition, plywood version was issued several years ago at a cost of several thousand dollars.A new version, crafted from kid-friendly polypropylene with a matte finish, has recently been produced and is available at a fraction of the cost of the original wood piece. Made in several "happy" colors, it's a joy to behold, and not something your child will be likely to forget anytime soon.

Finger In The NoseAhhhh the 1970's. Judging from the assortment of photos in my mother's album, it was a decade of, shall we say, "questionable" fashion statements. Bell bottom jeans came and went (and have come and gone again, for those keeping score), and color palettes featuring orange, green and brown reigned supreme. The '70's are back again. Sort of. A clothing company called "Finger In The Nose" has re-interpreted a wide range of fashions for toddlers (and bigger people, too) using 70's fashion as a jumping off point. The patterns, washed-out colors and easy-wearing style have remained, but gone are pea green hues and collars the size of an aircraft wing. The quality and details are top-notch, and collections include "Folk Rock" (James Taylor-esque), "Rockish" (Joey Ramone would be proud), and "Preppy Rock" (think Fab Four meets 2010. In Paris). Finger In The Nose has given us some winners here! Sorry Elton fans, there may be nothing for you here. Then again...

TwistbandBabies love to tug... pretty much anything within their reach is pulled hard with a grip that would make Superman envious. Perhaps the most common souvenir acquired by baby after a successful "grab and tug" maneuver is a clump of mommy's hair the size of a squirrel. Well, no more!Enter the "Twistband". It's a hair tie that is comfortable to wear (on your head and on your wrist) and fits mommy's sense of modern style. In short: it ain't a Scrunchy!Twistbands are made of an elastic trim, and come in all sorts of styles and colors. They'll work well from the gym to the cocktail party. They can be "customized" too, via imprinting, for promotional use, or to provide that extra level of custom bling you've been seeking. And remember: baby can't tug what baby can't reach!

Scout WalkaboutTrust me when I tell you this... there are indeed fathers who would jump at the chance to strut about town with their child in a baby carrier. The trouble is, we are decidedly less enthusiastic about doing so while sporting a paisley carrier trimmed in pink.Fathers take notice: the "Harley" of baby carriers has arrived. It's called the "Scout", and it will certainly eliminate the flak you'd otherwise expect from your poker buddies. Finely crafted by Petunia Pickle Bottom (stay with us guys, it's a winner), the Scout proudly offers what every man wants in an "accessory".For starters, it's tough. The sturdy felt shell comes in two man-approved color combinations, and is equipped with 2 interchangeable liners in coordinating colors (neither are pink). And, like a Harley, the Scout carrier is fitted with high-grade leather trim. Bold, chiseled lines and antique brass hardware complete your child's new ride. Unlike a Harley, the machine washable liners are eco-friendly and never need waxing. The next time one of your friends whispers "nice carrier", you'll know they're serious--and maybe just a bit jealous, too!

5 Minute MarvelOnce upon a time, when we were very young, each of us spent time capturing the oddities of our mind's eye using just crayons and paper. The purple and red pet hamster with nine legs, the family trip to planet whatchamacallit, or your neighbor's backyard garden that yielded giant talking vegetables. Strange. And at the same time glorious! The blog "5 Minute Marvels", started by a self-professed lover of comic books, encourages grown-ups to spend just 5 minutes drawing with a child the result can then be submitted for possible inclusion in the online showcase of drawings. The artwork is both simple and fun (not to mention an enriching way to spend time with your child, or one in your care). There are rules to the process, but they're easy to follow. In essence, you find a child. Then, have them choose (or make up) a hero or villain. Set a timer for 5 minutes (and no more!), then draw. Both of you. Until the timer buzzes or beeps. Scan the drawing, email it in, and if your lucky, your collaborative effort on "souper dawg" could be displayed on the 5 Minute Marvels blog, cape and all!

AutomobloxSo, you want to teach your toddler about the intricate workings of the internal combustion engine and are looking for the perfect interactive learning toy to help you segue into the conversation. No? Well, just in case that situation arises, Automoblox has you coveredRenowned designer Patrick Calello, whose work has been put to use by companies like Merck and Columbia Records, is the "idea architect" behind the Automoblox brand. It would be simple to say that Automoblox makes toy cars for children, but that would be a gross understatement. These toy cars are crafted with safety, interactivity, developmental growth, and "hip factor" in mind and from the looks of 'em, they excel in every area! The Automoblox line of vehicles (and "mini vehicles") merge modern aesthetics with old-school craftsmanship. Brightly colored windows and rubber wheels in blue, pink, green, etc. contrast playfully with the natural blond wood of the car body. Models can be disassembled, and standard-sized vehicles come with "passengers". Automoblox come in a variety of forms including SUVs, pickup trucks, and sports cars. Honestly, I've never really desired a minivan. That changed today.

Plan ToysEvery parent knows their child is special. We think we've found a toy company that's pretty special, too. Rather than focussing on a single item review this week however, we'll take a look at a few things that makes this company called "PlanToys" so interesting. PlanToys has taken great strides to embrace and incorporate earth friendly and socially responsible practices in their business. For starters, their manufacturing processes were designed to reduce energy consumption and waste. Product packaging are made of recycled content and printed with eco-friendly inks. In an effort to create the safest baby toys possible, their entire line of baby playthings is made from organic rubber wood and uses water-based, non toxic dyes. And by working with rehabilitation and education specialists, PlanToys has developed several adaptive toys especially for children with special needs, offering them free of charge to schools and organizations in the United States. Quality control, creativity, and customer service are also high on this company's list of priorities, as evidenced by the impressive national and international awards that have been bestowed upon PlanToys, including the prestigious Reddot Design Award, the German Design Prize, and Best Toy of the Year (Parenting Magazine).Check out the PlanToys website to browse their engaging toy lines that range from simple push toys to elaborate play sets including an "Eco Town", "Dino Explorer" and dollhouses. The site allows you to search for toys by child's age, or developmental level, and offers an informative section on child development, as well as tips for parents. We really like the PlanToys business model, and believe their products deserve more than a second look. Kudos, PlanToys we're not easily impressed!

Apple TVSo, you've made the investment in a widescreen high definition TV, and it sits large and proud in your living room or den. But, aside from premium channels and an occasional movie rendered with stellar clarity, is it really the center of a rich and rewarding family experience? What if your TV could display the mountain of personal photos and home movies packed onto the hard drive of your PC? Or connect to your family's Flickr albums? That would be something! What if you could search, browse and purchase music from the iTunes store from the comfort of your sofa? Or surf YouTube videos. Or view trailers for this summer's Hollywood blockbusters? What if you could buy or rent movies in HD, right from that same TV? Or catch entire seasons of shows from premium providors like HBO or the History Channel. Yeah, that's what I want my TV to do!Well, since 2007, that's what owners of "AppleTV" have been doing. And more. Overshadowed by media darlings like the iPhone, Apple's simple (and magical) device plugs into your widescreen HDTV, connects wirelessly to your home network, and makes a ton of cool stuff possible. Standard iTunes Store pricing applies for music and movies, but there is no subsription fee. If you can manage your iPod, you can likely handle the "tech" involved in an AppleTV setup. And wow, is it cool!

AminalsIf you are (or have ever been) the parent of a toddler, you've become acquainted with the special dialect of the English language that youngsters employ almost universally. That said, the products featured in this week's review need no additional introduction."Aminals" are the first in a collection of soft, squeezable characters that echo the imaginative drawings typically conjured-up by children. The aptly named "Momey", "Duggy", Smal Bayr", and "Wayul" (among others) are as recognizable as they are primitive, and lovable to the core! As icing on the cake, Aminals are also certified under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), ensuring that specific social criteria are applied at all stages of processing and production. That's good stuff. My own toddler would certainly exclaim... "Yayee Dady!"

Mysterio TeesInevitably, every parent wonders what their child will be when they grow up. It's only natural. Thankfully, a company called Wry Baby has taken decades of guesswork out of the equation, and can provide the answer right now (well, in the time it takes to deliver a T-shirt to your door, anyway).Order a toddler tee from Wry Baby, and "Mysterio" will send it imprinted with a cheeky career prediction. The exact nature of your child's true calling will remain a mystery until your package arrives. But fear not, conservative parents (or grand-parents) can find a list of the twelve possible occupations on Wry Baby's website. While Mysterio can certainly take some guesswork out of raising your child, we have our own prediction... most parents will do all they can to ensure their child can sidestep a career as a "Mafia Accountant".

LEGO AppThis review is for LEGO fans, and assuming you already own an iPhone (or soon to be released iPad), it's absolutely free! Developed by the LEGO Group, "LEGO Photo" is a simple program downloadable from Apple's App Store that finally answers the longstanding question: "What would my child's portrait look like if I had the time and patience to build it using LEGOs?" Okay honestly now that you're thinking about it, you just have to find out, don't you? Simply follow these simple steps:1) Reach across the table and tell your child that you need to borrow your iPhone for just a few minutes. (do this slowly, as the potential threat of being left iPhone-less may cause your child to flee).2) Using the phone, snap a photo of your child as he/she pouts (due primarily to the actions of step 1). 3) Download "LEGO Photo" from the App Store. 4) Launch the app, select the photo you snapped in step 3, and watch in digital awe as a painstaking and laborious task is accomplished in mere nanoseconds. If you've done this correctly, the resulting image will bring a smile to any childs face. Tada!

I Heart GutsThis weeks review may not be for the squeamish. And it's weird. Consider yourself forewarned! Still reading? Allllrighty then, let's get to it!You think you've got guts? Not like this, you don't. A cool (if not offbeat) company called "i Heart Guts" has a little something for everyone (or "from" everyone, as the case may be), from a happy plush pancreas to a Tee adorned with the phrase "smells like spleen spirit". You've got to see this stuff to believe it! i Heart Guts joins with health and medical organizations for fundraising too, making all the silliness and strange looks completely worthwhile.Uneventful day at the office? Just imagine the conversations that would follow your spirited explanation of the adrenal gland lapel pin you wore to work. Oh, we're serious - it's available online.

Le Petit Owlet ETSY is known for its roundup of extremely talented craftsmen (and women), so it was only a matter of time before HelloFam featured a talented ETSY artisan. This week's product of choice comes by way of "Le Petit Owlet" in the form of custom organic diapers. These colorful little "bum-wraps" truly represent the "Three C's" that HelloFam looks for in children's clothing They're Cool, Comfy, and Corganic. Okay, we digress, corganic isn't really a word, but "Two C's and an O" just didn't sound right. The bottom line is (no pun intended) if it's good for baby, than it's good with us!At only $15 per diaper, we'd put this in our "man, I gotta have some" category too, if we had such an animal. Just provide Le Petit Owlet with your wee one's rise, choose a pattern, fold, and soaker style, and you'll have the hippest custom diapers on earth headed your way. We're pretty sure you won't find these at your local organic market!

Flair Highchair It's no secret that having children brings new, often sophmoric, changes to your homes interior decor. Primary colors, an abundance of cheerful character-based decorations, and loads of plastic surely abound. It's an unintended consequence, but it happens all the same. For those with more modern sensibilities, a company called "Boon" provides an alternative in the form of a highchair called "Flair".Somewhat of a cross between barber chairs of yesteryear and the seating you would expect to find on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise, the Flair incorporates a bit of the old with a lot of the new. Among the features are pneumatic height adjustment, scratch-resistant urethane casters, and a crevice-free design that makes it a snap to clean (a welcome premise for a highchair).Parents keeping track of the nasty things to keep their children away from will be pleased to note that the Flair is BpA, Phthaalate, and PVC-free. It's bold style may not be for every home, but if you're seeking "different" with utilitarian benefits, your search may well end with the Boon Flair.

R.E.D. Helmets Florida is not generally known for arctic-like forecasts, but as temperatures here ducked below freezing several times over the past week, we couldn't help but think of our friends up north. Somewhere on a frozen slope, far from the heated comfort of the main lodge, a father is teaching his little boy how to carve a perfect turn on his freshly waxed snowboard. Some children posses an inherent ability to descend a snow-covered mountain with grace. Others--not so much. Either way, Burton (arguably the leader in snowboarding technology) provides patient fathers with a hip (and smart) solution for keeping their child's melon intact while they learn... the Buzzcap, Youth Hi-Fi and Trace Grom (AKA the R.E.D. line of Burton helmets). We like 'em!Safety rated to appropriate standards? Yes. Removable goggle clip, "Airvanced Ventilation" and lightweight? Yup. Cool, mountain-shredding graphics? uh-huh. Dad's (and moms) everywhere have reason to celebrate. It's no secret that a helmet is a good idea. But at long last, your child can stay protected while looking good, too. That's a win-win situation for everyone involved. Good job dad! Now, take a break and get the two of you a couple cups of hot chocolate. It's cold out there. And hey... you've earned it!

The Scout There is certainly no shortage of utility bags on the market, but for reasons unknown, there seems to be a shortage of bags with real character. Enter a company called Petunia Pickle Bottom. Yes, the name is correct (and we love it!). PPB crafts bags of exceptional quality and, dare we say--character.Our very own company president has forgone the standard "man bag", electing instead to pack his child's travel necessities within the refined good looks of a PPB "Scout" bag. Ryan says--people consistently tell me how much they admire my laptop bag... little do they know that it's chockfull of diapers and wipes". He explained "it's not a 'carry everything with you' bag"--after all, that's what the SUV is for--"but it can accommodate all the essentials required for short trips", which is exactly what this savvy dad requires.Petunia Pickle Bottom offers the Scout bag in several "father-approved" colors, and is outfitted with indispensable features including snap-off bottle pockets, a changing pad, and a lined cell phone pocket. Pengoloo This week's post-holiday review returns us to "the good old days" of family fun with a nifty memory game from an equally nifty company called Blue Orange. The game, Pengoloo, employs the rolling of color marked dice, a dozen cute wooden penguin figures, and an assortment of colorful wooden eggs. Sound easy? Well, it is... and that's what makes it a hit with the wee ones. Memory skills and a bit of luck are the focus of the game, as players attempt to be the first to collect 6 penguins and their eggs.Blue Orange has garnered an impressive list of awards for their inventive games, and Pengoloo is no exception. Parenting Magazine, the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio, NAPPA, Dr. Toy, Creative Child, the National Parenting Center and the Canadian Toy Testing Council have all honored Pengoloo as a game of distinction. Blue Orange is committed to preserving the environment as well, and plants two trees for each tree used in the production of their educational games. That's icing on the cake! My 3 year old daughter picked this game up in a local store because she was instantly enamored with the penguins on the box (she has a thing for penguins). We didn't buy it at the time, but Santa saw fit to leave it under the tree, and I'm certainly glad he did! Call us nostalgic, but in a season dominated with blinking lights, digital chirps and more late night "battery hunting" than I care to admit, it's a nice change of pace. The all-wood construction and simple color-based gameplay is not only "hip", its honest. This game is exactly what it appears to be - I wish that were true of more of the toys that were under the tree this year.

e-glueIf you have children, you understand their fascination with stickers - or have at least witnessed that fascination, even if you don't truly understand it. A French company called e-glue apparently understands, and has contributed to the phenomenon of sticker love in a big way - literally.E-glue's fanciful, kid-themed stickers feature near life-sized subjects including tree houses, trains and Tyrannosaurus Rex, and will instantly turn your child's room into the coolest kid hangout in the neighborhood. Stickers are available in several different styles and sizes - as part of themed sets, or individually. E-glue even offers a service that can convert your child's drawings into oversized wall stickers, so they can outfit their room with images from their own imagination. That's nifty! You probably want to keep the application of giant, over-sized stickers in the hands (arms?) of grown-ups, but we'll let you make that call. Just don't blame us if the family dog winds up securely adhered to the wall of the family room. "Hang on Spot, this may hurt a little..."

"Coolify" Your PhotoWhen you really pause to think about it, curious tidbits of Pop-Culture surround us constantly. Some of them endure for generations, like the lava lamp or Chia Pet. Others, like the pet rock, eventually run their course and disappear. PrintedBIG.com brings us yet another of these curiosities... perhaps it was only a matter of time before ordinary citizens would be able to "Obamify" their image. The simple process, dubbed "coolifying", involves choosing a color palette that agrees with your Pop Culture aesthetic (or one that matches your drapes), uploading a photo of the chosen candidate (your child, your dog, etc.) and PrintedBIG.com will handle the rest. The process costs $50-$80, and is added to the cost of the canvas size you choose, ranging from $10 to $200. Choose an 8x10 to give to grandma, or make Obama proud with a 36x48 poster-sized image. It may be too soon to tell if this coolifying fad will become something more - or whether your child will recognize the Pop Historical reference of the poster-sized print of him or herself when they discover it in a closet a decade from now. But that's okay we understand it today, and that's what really matters. Long live the lava lamp!

If you haven't heard of Threadless clothing designs, then you're in for a treat this week! A holiday sale on the company's site means you can add some pretty hip tees to your wardrobe (or that of your son or daughter) without breaking the bank.
"Threadless" is a design studio that encourages designers, professional or amateur, to design the company's clothing. That's pretty cool. What's even cooler though, is that visitors to the website vote to decide which designs are actually utilized.
This spin on product develeopment is especially exciting when applied to childrens T's... always dreamed of dressing your child in a shirt that features a snow cone and donut holding hands, and jumping through a sprinkler? We thought so. Well then, today's your lucky day! You'll find that at Threadless!
Jump on now to take advantage of thier awesome holiday sale. All tees and onsies are marked down to $12, almost half-off most items. There's no excuse not to be funky fresh this holiday season... you, or your kids.
